“Death’s Cameo”
Death’s Head Moths (Acherontia Lachesis), antique cameos, hand painted coyote jaw and various dried florals in an antique bubble glass frame.
These Death Head Moths were part of a batch of moths I received that were fairly damaged, everyone’s favorite part of the moth- the telltale skull- was completely invisible :( Rather than throw them away I decided to replace the skull with these vintage cameo pieces found antiquing, fitting the theme of recycled antique frames! I painted the scavenged coyote jaw and added gold to accent the edges of the moth wings.
Because of the state the moths came to me in, there was a little bit of post framing.. leakage. A quick fun fact about what’s happening here- moths live primarily off fat stores built up as caterpillars, even species that feed as adults need these fat stores to survive. In large moths, like these Death’s Heads, the fat stores can seep out as grease. Because Death’s Heads are a species that feed of honey as adults, the sugar also seeps out post death and in this case, crystallized around the edges of a couple of the moths!
Because this was not the original state of the moths when framed, I have discounted this piece and included in my seconds sale, meaning there are no returns or refunds so please examine the photos closely!
Please do not select the $5 shipping option for this frame. I do not factor shipping into my overall price. If you do not select the correct shipping option I will invoice for the remaining payment
